The flightless Emu is widespread over Australia’s open country. The second largest bird (Ostrich is the biggest), measures 5 ft high and weighs about 120 lbs. Emus are fast runners and have been clocked at speeds of up to 50 mph.

The Aborigines looked upon the emu as the core of their existence. The emu provided them with food, clothing, shelter and spiritual sustenance. Today, this bird of the past is playing a large role in the the skin industry.

In the wild Emus are opportunistically nomadic and follow rain, feeding on grains, flowers, fruit, soft shoots, insects, grubs, and whatever else is available.
